Early Career and Education
Before beginning his esteemed career in travel and hospitality, Curtis Carlson Nelson completed his education, earning numerous honors and recognitions along the way. From 1982 until 1986, Curtis Carlson Nelson attended Cornell University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Hotel, Motel, and Restaurant Management.
The Hotel, Motel, and Restaurant Management major provides students with a wealth of diverse knowledge in a variety of fields related to hospitality. The program works to prepare individuals such as Curtis Carlson Nelson for management roles in operations and facilities where food, lodging, travel, and other similar services are provided to the public. Here he earned his Master’s degree in Business Administration and Management, further developing the skills he learned while earning his undergraduate degree with a stronger focus on management and marketing. Additionally, Curtis Carlson Nelson has also received honorary doctorate degrees from Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island as well as Niagara University in Niagara, New York.
For Curtis Carlson Nelson, his years spent at college were some of the most formative and life changing experiences of his life. Meeting new people and gaining new perspectives from a diverse group of friends, students, faculty and beyond greatly furthered his passions for pursuing a career in travel and hospitality.
Professional Career and Professional Affiliations
While still working towards completion of his Master’s degree at the Carlson School of Management, Curtis Carlson Nelson was already jumping into leadership roles and developing his professional career. In 1993, he became the President and CEO of Country Hospitality where he successfully managed and redefined a chain of over 350 Country Kitchen Restaurants within the Family Dining Industry. Over the course of his two years under this role, Curtis Carlson Nelson was responsible for the major growth and development of the Country Inn and Suites brand, now represented with over 500 locations across the globe.
In the years following, Curtis Carlson Nelson continued his great success in a variety of roles as a President, CEO, and Chairman for a number of companies in the travel and hospitality industry. While he has performed unique duties under each separate role, Curtis Carlson Nelson has consistently demonstrated a number of significant professional qualities including:

Curtis Carlson Nelson is an esteemed member of the Executive Committee for the World Travel and Tourism Council based in Washington, D.C. He is also a board member of many schools and colleges including the School of Hotel, Restaurant, & Institutional Management at the University of Delaware, the Conrad Hilton Hotel School of the University of Houston in Texas, as well as the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Other organizations based in MN that Curtis Carlson Nelson is a part of include the Walker Arts Center, Athletes Committed to Education (ACE), and the Greater Twin Cities United Way. Lastly, Curtis Carlson Nelson has held a long standing relationship as a board member with the Travel Business Roundtable established in Washington, D.C.

Curtis Carlson Nelson has won two Lifetime Achievement Awards, one with the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) and another with the Hospitality Industry Diversity Institute. He has been recognized for the Experience Lodging Initiative with the American Hotel and Lodging Association. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Curtis Carlson Nelson was honorably presented with the title as a Young Global Leader. He was presented with the Humanitarian Award from the Georgie Doty Heath and Education Foundation. He has been honored by the Young Presidents’ Organization and received the honor of Advocate of the Year from LifeSource. Additionally, Curtis Carlson Nelson is a distinguished member of the Hospitality Hall of Honor at the Conrad Hilton College of Hospitality in Houston, Texas.
